Last year, we lost my Papa. He battled diabetes for nine years, a relentless fight that ultimately took him from us at 77. He should have turned 78 this February. He was a headstrong man, determined to live his life, even with the constraints of his illness. He followed his diet, mostly, but he also had a mischievous streak, sneaking in ice cream when he thought no one was looking. That little act of defiance, that small indulgence, was so very him.

Losing him has been a profound experience, a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the insidious nature of diabetes. It’s a disease that doesn’t discriminate, that quietly chips away at your health, stealing time and joy. And now, as I navigate my own 40s, I find myself facing similar health challenges. My recent blood work was a wake-up call, a stark reminder that I, too, am vulnerable.

This isn’t just my story; it’s the story of countless families. Diabetes is a silent epidemic, affecting millions worldwide. It’s a disease that often goes undiagnosed until it’s too late, a disease that can lead to devastating complications if left unchecked.

But we don’t have to be passive victims. We can fight back. We can take control of our health and make informed choices that empower us to live longer, healthier lives.

Let’s do it for ourselves, and let’s do it for Papa.

Here’s what I’ve learned, and what I hope you’ll consider:

  • Knowledge is power: Educate yourself about diabetes. Understand the risk factors, the symptoms, and the complications.
  • Regular checkups are crucial: Don’t wait until you’re feeling unwell. Schedule regular checkups with your doctor and get your blood sugar levels checked.
  • Healthy lifestyle choices matter: A balanced diet, regular exercise, and stress management are essential for preventing and managing diabetes.
  • Support is vital: Don’t go it alone. Find a support group, talk to your family and friends, and connect with others who understand what you’re going through.
  • Small changes make a big difference: You don’t have to overhaul your entire life overnight. Start with small, manageable changes and gradually build from there.

My Papa’s fight was a testament to his strength and resilience. But it was also a reminder that diabetes is a formidable opponent. We owe it to ourselves, and to our loved ones, to take this disease seriously.

So, to all my fellow 40-somethings, to anyone facing health challenges, let’s join forces. Let’s fight this disease together. Let’s kick it out before it kicks us. Le
