Okay, I’ll admit it. Sometimes I look at someone with wrinkles and gray hair and think, “Wow, they’re old.” Then I do a double-take. Wait a minute… they’re the same age as me!
It’s a strange feeling, this realization that the “old people” I saw when I was a kid are now my peers. Remember when 40 seemed ancient? Now, it’s just… Tuesday.
I think it’s because we hold onto this image of ourselves as eternally youthful. In our minds, we’re still that carefree kid riding bikes or that awkward teenager trying to fit in. But the mirror (and my aching knees) tell a different story.
The weirdest part? Sometimes I don’t feel old. Sure, I need reading glasses now and staying up past 10 pm is a Herculean effort. But inside, there’s still a part of me that feels like I’m just getting started.
Maybe it’s this disconnect between how we see ourselves and how the world sees us that makes aging so strange. Or maybe it’s just the shock of realizing that time, that relentless force, marches on for all of us.
So, what do we do with this weirdness? Embrace it, I say! Laugh about the creaky joints and the senior moments. Celebrate the wisdom and experience that come with age. And most importantly, remember that age is just a number. We’re as young as we feel, right?
